Civic organisations involved in the organisation of Las Fallas (Valencia) and Magdalena (Castellón) have initiated on social networks campaigns like #fallas2020 or #laplanta in the attempt to make quarantine easier to go through.

Valencian musicians have also united against Coronavirus. The Federation of Musical Societies in the Valencian Community (FSMCV) has launched the campaign #FestivalDelsBalcons.

Musicians are encouraged to perform popular songs like “Paquito el chocolatero” and “Amparito Roca” from their balconies or windows, on Tuesday, 19th of March, at 12:00.

Due to the cancellation of its grandest festival, Magdalena, in the city of Castellón de la Plana, a civic campaign was launched. At lunch time, people step out on their balconies, or stand at their windows and start making noise, using pans, spoons, traditional musical instruments like tabals and dolçaines or anything else they have on hand. “It will be the best mascletà in history”, is written on the flyers distributed accross the city, and “our triumph over illness”.

Share this news! It’s about moments of joy that can fill many homes and souls!

What is orchata?

Orchata is the generic name for a variety of beverages primarily made of plant milk, usually cereals.

Valencian horchata is made out of Chufas (the Spanish term for Tiger Nuts). Tiger nuts, also known as yellow nutsedge or earth almonds, are not actually nuts, but rather edible tubers. Orchata is a cold beverage made with water, sugar and wet or ground up tiger nuts.
Chufa is considered a super food due to its incredible nutritional properties. It is rich in minerals(phosphorus, calcium, potassium, magnesium and iron), unsaturated fats, proteins and vitamins(vitamins C and E) and contributes important enzymes which help digestion. Horchata regulates blood pressure and is suitable for people with hypertension, and is also recommended in diets which help lower cholesterol. Due to its lower energy value it is better than soy milk.

Las Fallas 2020. Cant de l’Estoreta Velleta, children’s contest, Sunday, March 8th

Sunday, the 8th of March, at 10:00, in Plaza del Carmen, Carmen district, will take place the “Cant de l’Estoreta Velleta” contest.

What is about “Cant de l’Estoreta Velleta”

The contest is a tradition that dates back to the ‘60s, when fallers, members of Falla Plaza del Árbol, decided to retrace some their childhood moments. It was the beginning of spring when carpenters and other locals were cleaning their houses, throwing away old things into the streets, that they would burn, come the day of the patron of the guild, Saint Joseph.

Children were walking the streets, dragging an old carpet after them (“estoreta veletta” means “old carpet” in Valencian), in which they gathered the scraps and other things being thrown away. Their enjoyment came from stacking all the things together in order to burn them. To garner attention whilst walking the streets they sang a popular song, which in time became a faller anthem.

* Foto source: www.valenciablancoynegro.blogspot.com.es/ and valenciabonita.es

Its chorus is now well known: “¿Hi ha una estoreta velleta/per a la falla de Sant Josep,/del tio Pep…?” (Do you have some old stuff/For Saint Joseph’s falla/from uncle Pep…?).

In order for the event to be even more evocative of ancient Valencia, participants wear typical Valencian costumes from the 19th and 20th centuries.

Beginning with 1962 the Cant de l’Estoreta Velleta contest takes place annually, in Plaza del Carmen. Participants are children that represent different moments in the social life of late 19th and early 20th centuries Valencia.

Las Fallas 2020. Cabalgata del Ninot. Parade of the main figurines of the monuments, Saturday, the 7th of March

Saturday, the 7th of March beginning at 17:30, will take place Cabalgata del Ninot 2020 . This manifestation is a parade of the figurines presented in the Ninot exposition, considered representative of a monument (falla).

The parade is in fact a contest which focuses on the originality of the represented idea, the satirical message, rhythm and choreography, costumes, and also ease of understanding, without the need for an explanation.

Beginning with 2019, Cabalgata del Ninot has included a new concept: the representation of a certain part of the monument through a show of music and choreography.

Cabalgata del Ninot is organized by the Junta Central Fallera. 10 fallera committees will be present at Cabalgata del Ninot 2020.
