A vertical mascletá of grand proportions will take place on Saturday, the 29th of February 2020, at 20:00, at La Marina de Valencia, in front of the “Veles e Vents” building.
At its fifth edition, the show is organized to celebrate the upcoming “Las Fallas” festival, which officially starts on the 1st of March.
Similarly to the previous editions, Ricardo Caballer will be staging the show. This year’s mascletá will be 2 times the height of Miguelete, the tower of the Cathedral, reaching the following measurements: 100 meters (328 feet) in height, 50 meters (164 feet) in width, and 5000 firecrackers will explode. The ending will be even more intense than usual. In just 20 seconds, 600 kilograms (1323 lbs.) of pyrotechnic material will create a “quake” of grand proportions. During the 10 minutes, the show will combine the best elements of a mascletà with the ones of a firework show.
Similar to the previous editions, Ricardo Caballer will be staging the show. He aims for this year’s mascletá to be a grand show that surprises and impresses with innovative elements.
The previous mascletá, organized in 2019 for the same occasion, was the tallest in the history of Las Fallas, reaching the following highs: 100 meters (328 feet) in height, 50 meters (164 feet) in width, a 12-minute duration, 1700 kilograms (3748 pounds) of gunpowder and 5000 firecrackers used, a 20-second “quake” (3 times stronger than a regular mascletá), and over 100 000 participants.
What is it a mascletá
Mascletá is a pyrotechnic show typical to the Valencian Community. It features firecracker explosions and fireworks, it has a crescendo dynamic and lasts between 5 and 7 minutes. The last part of the show is the most intense and loud, and is called the “quake”. The noise created reaches 120 decibels and it’s similar to the noise created by a plane taking off.

Environmentally friendly mascletà
This year’s mascletà will be the least harmful to the environment in the entire history of Las Fallas, by reducing the waste by 70%. Three-quarters of the mascletà will just disappear. Ricardo Caballer claims that “30% of the material used is paper and biodegradable cardboard. The cardboard used will disappear on contact with water or soil, without harming the environment.” Furthermore, no kind of plastic or chemical substance considered harmful to the environment will be used.
